To whom it may concern: As of now I have little community activism under my belt though I had an internship with NAACP last semester and worked with Animal Safehouse for Service Learning of Fall 2009. Personally, my experience is limited because I work about 30 hours a week for Publix, but I would not like that to deter one from seeing my potential as a social activist. I am really interested in putting theories into practice so that a social revolution may occur. A unique selling point is I am charismatic and get along with people very easily. I find it very easy to socialize with individuals (no matter the age) especially if I have never met them before. Also, I have been adequately trained in Philosophy which allows me to have a critical eye as well as critical mind. My philosophical depth has been said to be very keen and my compassion runs along side with my pursuit of knowledge. I’m always around to play the devil’s advocate to attempt to strengthen and/or weaken an argument or position. I’m a fast learner, and just absolutely love theory. My academic journey is full of philosophical courses ranging from the Faith and Reason to African American Philosophy. I really enjoy my field of study because, as Marx noted, philosophy is full of interpretations of the world, but the real point is to change the world. This is what I am here for (to change the world), and I feel that philosophy is my calling so that I may better understand oppression, justice, and social change as it applies to theorized frameworks. If it isn’t obvious by now, I am a Philosophy major with a minor in Women’s Studies. Originally I am from a small town called Homestead just north of the Florida Keys. I’ve spent three-quarters of my existence there while the other quarter was in Hubert, North Carolina. I was raised by a single mother in a man’s world which has shown me the many advantages of privilege and disadvantages of oppression as it interconnects with gender, race, sexuality, age, able-bodiness, and class. But I was young then and could not fully grasp the reality that was ahead. I have grown up rather quickly then my fellow peers as I found myself questioning “prima facie” knowledge from the time I was thirteen and living on my own by age sixteen. My mother has taught me well to always show acknowledgement, respect, and regard for individuals regardless of prior stereotypes, dilemmas, etc; everyone deserves a [second] chance. Within five years, I see myself writing a dissertation on achieving justice through changing our dominant forms of epistemology for my PhD in philosophy. Hopefully, I will also be writing a dissertation for a PhD in Women Studies around the same time. My dreams and aspirations lie in becoming a professor that specializes in critical race theory, feminist philosophy, epistemology, queer theory, and all types of marginalized theory as it applies to social, moral, and political philosophy. Throughout grad school I would like to become an “underground revolutionary hero” by being an activist within my community and society at large. I am currently twenty-one, mixed-race (Black and white), and a lesbian who is absolutely intolerant of oppressive behavior.

Dear Public Relations:
My name is Mike Vinson and I am applying for the volunteer technical position recently posted on your organization’s web site. In this letter, I will reveal personal information, my educational background, community service, and my future plans.
Here is some information about my professional and academic experience in IT (Information Technology). Professionally, I provided technical support for American and European customers for the Napster music service and SanDisk flash media memory products. At this time, I currently provide technical support for JBT (Jean Bean Technology) Aerotech, a manufacturer of ground support equipment for major air lines and overnight freight couriers. When I was not providing technical for my employer, I was working on my associates’ degree at a community college. Eventually, I received my AS (Associates of Science) Degree in Cisco Networking and my AA (Associates of Arts) Degree in General Education from SCC (Seminole Community College) in Sanford, Florida.
Upon graduation from SCC, I enrolled at UCF (University of Central Florida)’s main Orlando campus to continue my education. As an undergraduate student at, I am working on my Interdisciplinary Studies Degree which compromises of humanities, computation science, and modern languages (German). I am enrolled in a women’s studies class for the summer semester. Each student in the class has to commit at least 15 hours to a community service project: I wish to devote my time to Animal Safehouse to assist pets and their owners through volunteering.
Since I am committed to helping others, I enjoy giving back to the community through volunteering. My church’s singles group travels to a local retirement home to sing Sunday hymn for the residents. Another activity I enjoy is repairing and refurbishing donated personal computers, laptops, monitors, and printers that are given to prescreened low income single parent families. Additionally, as a member of a local Toastmaster’s group, I have given speeches to middle school students informing them of various undergraduate programs available at the university.
As for my long term future plans for the next decade, I will continue my education at the graduate level at UCF. My Masters and Ph.D. will be in elementary education where I teach children in private schools abroad or lecture undergraduate students in women’s studies classes at community colleges in Florida.
I would like to schedule an appointment that is convenient to us. Please feel free to contact me at my email michaelvinson32789@yahoo.com or by cell phone at 407-754-5692.
Thank you again for your time and I hope to hear from you.
My name is Michaela and I am 29 years old. I am very interested in volunteering for your organization and would like to tell you about myself, my background and my work experience. Although I have no history of volunteer work I do have an extensive employment background and a wonderful work ethic. Although I have held many jobs from seamstress to cocktail waitress I feel that the job that fit me best was chef. I started cooking professionally in kitchens when I was 20 and fell in love. It was in a kitchen that I discovered my creativity and love of hard, physical labor. That, I believe, is my unique selling point; my love of back-breaking manual labor. There is no such thing as to tired, too hot, too sore or too worn-out when working in a good kitchen. In these kitchens I learned about true teamwork and integrity. I learned the value of a good employee and also the value of being a good manager. I have worked in several different restaurants with many different types of people and it has really opened my eyes to the plight of the American immigrant and has also helped me get used to communicating with non-English speakers. Coming from upper-middle class white suburbia it was really nice to have a chance to be reminded of what a culturally diverse community in which we live. My future plans are to keep going to school; I am a Molecular Biology major. I will be applying to medical school soon and I would love to be able to carry on with volunteering throughout my career.
My name is Diandra Loux. I am a white female. I grew up in the somewhat small town of Daytona Beach Florida. I went to Catholic school all my life, completely by choice while my brother chose to attend public school. I come from a very liberal family which was sometimes extremely strange for my at times because I was used to being around children who were raised in extremely conservative catholic households. Of course by the end of our first semester in college, I noticed that all of my friends who had been sheltered all of their lives were now out of control. My parents always kept me very involved in politics, so when I graduated highschool and enrolled in college I chose to be a Political Science major with a minor in Communications in hopes to one day be a political analyst. I have a decent amount of experience in being an activist due to my internship last semester with an organization called Organizing for America. This is an extension of the Obama campaign. I got the priviledge to work with both President Obama and Vice President Biden in Florida and also Washington D.C. When there were no events to work, we spent the majority of our time tabling and working the phone booths. I plan on taking the GRE this summer and getting my maters in a specialized field of Political Science.
I am Alla Kotlyar. I was born in Odessa, Ukraine. I feel that I am different than many people I meet. My parents raised me to be very conservative with politics, religion (Jewish), and family. I am currently living with my family and will be living with them until I am finished with my bachelors degree. I do not exactly feel held back or that I am not getting the college experience. The "college experience" should not be about getting drunk and making poor decisions. Although, I do believe that I am sheltered from people because I live with my family, I do not have dangerous or annoying roommates bothering me. Instead I have my loving mother cooking me dinner. My family does not try to restrict me from going out I am able to go out and spend time with friends. For instance, I enjoy going salsa dancing, eating sushi, and cuddling by the fire. An advantage I was able to have from being Ukrainian is speaking Russian, and Hebrew. I am Jewish, and I had a Bat Mitzvah when I was twelve years old, and I feel that I am a religious person. I am certainly raising my children Jewish. I would like to live in a big city, such as New York City, or Chicago, or San Francisco. I enjoy traveling the world, more than anything else. Whenever I have the time and the money I am going to a different place, and you will see and hear about it on my facebook. I enjoy meeting people who are not from the same background as I am. It makes life interesting! One day I would like to be a successful commercial lawyer. I want to change the world to be a better place. I will make my mark.
Mike's questions for the posted introductionary letters:
Questions for Michaela? Have you pursued the passion for cooking with a degree in the culinary arts? When you receive your degree in Molecular Biology, what will you do with it? Will you remain in Florida or do you plan to relocate? Do you speak any foreign languages?
Questions for Nicole: When you have received your Ph.D. in Philosphy, where do you plan to live? When you tell someone that about your educational background, what are some of the responses that you have received from those that are not UCF students? When disclosing your educational pursuits to an employer, what is the employer's interest level in your activities and what did some of the employers comment your education? What was living in Florida like compared to North Carolina (culture, family, economy, etc.)?
Questions for Diandra: What political activities and groups are your parents involved in? As a result of working for Organizing for America, what were some of the lessons you learned as a result of volunteering for the organization? When you receive your undergraduate degree, will you continue the graduate studies at UCF or at a different location? Will you remove in Florida or do you plan to relcoate?
Questions for Alla: How have the feminist studies enriched your life? How will you incorporate the feminist studies courses into your goal of becoming a commercial lawyer?
The feminist course, has made me more open-minded, then I have been raised. I am really enjoying taking this class, I believe I learn something everyday in class.
Nicole- Do you ever visit the Florida Keys?
Mike- Where exactly would you like to teach abroad?
Michaela- What kind of doctor would you like to be?
Diandra- Do you plan on moving to Washingtion D.C in the future?
