Advertising Analysis Assignment

Advertisement Analysis

WST 3015 Introduction to Women’s Studies

Requirement:

1. Select an ad/commercial that can be link to some aspect of our readings in class.

2. Write a thesis for the ad/commercial. In the thesis answer the following questions: Why is the ad significant? How does it affect the audience beyond selling a product? Use facts and data related to the thesis. (For example: One out of four women will experience domestic violence in this country)

3. Write 5 topic sentences related to the various ideas the ad/commercial is presenting.

4. The trick is to make the topic sentences relate to the thesis, otherwise if they do not match, they don’t make any sense.

5. Name brand and show the commercial link or a picture of the ad.

6. Answer the following questions:

a. What is the product or service being sold? Can you easily figure out what the product is?

b. What is the general mood or feeling of the ad/commercial? Since we know the product or service being sold, what methods are the advertisers using to make us interested? How do they portray the product or service in a positive light?

c. How do the actors playing the characters affect your interpretation of the ad/commercial? Would your interpretation change if the characters were of a different race or gender? What if the characters dressed differently or spoke differently? How would that change your perception of the character?

d. How does the ad/commercial try to get your attention? Does it use flashy graphics with fast music? Does it alter the way we see the world, either through the use of special effects or through the story line?

e. Who is this ad/commercial aimed towards? Is it you or someone like you? How do you know? Why do you think the advertiser created this commercial the way they did? Would it have been as effective if it were just black and white text on the screen? Why or why not?

7. This exercise should be one page.

The product being sold is a giant hamburger from Hardees and, no, it is not obvious what the product is until the announcer says it. Otherwise it would just be a confusing video about a slutty girl washing a car and eating a hamburger. The general mood is horny, basically super soft-core porn. The method utilized is sex. If you eat this burger you will either look like Paris Hilton or Paris Hilton will want to have sex with you. The ‘actor’ in the commercial is the commercial, without her the advertisement would be completely different. Race I do not think would be as big of a change but if it was a man crawling around in tat bathing suit I think the popularity would have been lower as well as a completely different demographic would have been targeted. This ad gets your attention with sex. This ad is aimed towards anyone who knows who Paris Hilton is who either wants to look like her or wants their girlfriend to look like her. I think this ad was effective in the sense that A LOT of people watched it and it got a lot of attention but I cannot believe anyone was actually persuaded to buy that hamburger directly because of this advertisement. Due to the United States obsession with beauty and skinny women and also, ironically, fast food hamburgers, this ad epitomizes perfectly the shortsightedness of the average citizen while contorting young people’s ideas of what an attractive woman looks like. The ad is significant because it is a perfect example of marketing professionals selling products boasting credentials and effects that have nothing to do with the product. It is just one more image of an unattainable type of beauty that is inundating the consciousness of modern society. A study conducted by Teen People magazine reported, 27% of the girls felt that the media pressures them to have a perfect body. Ads just like this are one of the direct causes of the widespread Anorexia epidemic. Like Paris Hilton would ever eat some crap hamburger from Hardees.

Low self-esteem, eating disorders, and depression are the most common mental health problems in girls. While they are looking at these commercials that the girls are showing their midriff, which is not substantial for healthy women. This depicts that this advertisement is teaching girls that it is normal to look as if you do not have an appetite. this also effects the audience for women to look the same as one another with having blonde highlighted hair, in the commercial it is stated, "to be who you want to be," but it is actually telling girls to look like barbie, which is realistically impossible. There are 59% of 5–12th grade girls in one survey were dissatisfied with their body shape and 20–40% of girls begin dieting at age 10. At age 15, girls are twice as likely to become depressed than boys. Among 5–12th graders, 47% said they wanted to lose weight because of magazine pictures. Health risks accompany girls' drop in self-esteem due to risky eating habits, depression, and unwanted pregnancy. Girls aged 10 and 12 (tweens) are confronted with "teen" issues such as dating and sex, at increasingly earlier ages. 73% of 8–12–year olds dress like teens and talk like teens.
The product of the commercial is Highlighting hair in different colors, and tricking girls to appear how they want to be, but it telling them to look a certain way. The product is not simple to figure out because their are girls dancing and partying. In other words young girls look at this commercial and feel bad about their appearance, and consider how they want to be in this commercial and hang out with Hilary Duff and Barbie.
These young teenage girls feel about themselves because their told they're not whole without this new product. The interpretation of this commercial would change if it was of a different race and gender because girls would not feel that this new product is necessary in their life if it was males getting highlights. Instead many people would consider it to be homosexual, although both males and females get their hair colored. The commercial has fast music, pretending that their life is party and telling the audience, "be blue, be pink, be you." People are not blue or pink, changing their hair color is not being them, no wonder so many girls have horrible self-esteem. They are constantly being told what they need to change about themselves, and not to be happy with how they look naturally. This commercials is made for pre-teens and young teenage girls, who are impressionable. If the product only had black and white print on the screen, the item would not be sold, since Hilary Duff was not selling the product, and having the time of her life. These impressionable teens watch this commercial and want to join Hilary Duff at the party.

Thesis and 5 topic sentences: This product will make you sexy and beautiful. Women should look like Paris Hilton. Hamburgers will make you thin and gorgeous. Beauty does not have anything to do with health. Sexy is dressing slutty. Advertisements do not need to have anything to do with the product.
